How to video call a creator you follow: a step-by-step guide

To video call a creator you follow, open their hello.fan link (it usually sits in their bio and looks like hello.fan/theirname), create a free account, add some credits and tap Call while they're shown as online. Their phone rings like a normal call. Nothing is charged while it rings: you pay per started 15 seconds, at the per-minute price on their page, only once you're both connected.

Disclosure: this site is published by the team behind hello.fan. The steps below describe hello.fan; other paid chat platforms work in their own way, so check their pages.

Can you really call a creator you follow?

Yes, if they have opened a paid chat page. More and more creators, teachers and coaches take one-to-one calls from their audience instead of trying to answer every DM. The call is the product: a few minutes of their time, live, by video, voice or text chat. You pay for the minutes you use, and the creator sets the price.

What you can't do is ring someone who hasn't opened a page, and that's a good thing. A creator with a page has chosen to take calls, picked their prices and set the hours when they're reachable. You're not intruding; you're using the door they built.

  • Their bio. Instagram, TikTok, X, a YouTube channel's links: look for hello.fan/ followed by their name.
  • A pinned post, a story or a video description. Creators often announce "I'm taking calls tonight" with the link.
  • Their groups. WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord communities they run.
  • The directory. If you don't follow anyone yet, hello.fan's directory lists who is online right now, with filters for topics and languages.

Some creators keep their page unlisted, so it doesn't show up in the directory. Their link, or their exact username, still works.

Step 2: What should you check on their page?

A creator's page tells you everything you need before you spend anything:

  • Their status. Online means they can take a call now; "in a call" means they're busy; offline means it's a time to book or leave a hello instead.
  • Their prices. Video, voice and chat each have their own per-minute price in credits. Video costs the most and chat the least; some creators even offer chat for free.
  • What a call is for. Their headline and description say what they're happy to talk about.
  • A blue Verified badge, if they've checked their ID with hello.fan.

Step 3: How do you create an account?

Joining is free and takes a minute. You'll confirm you're 18 or over, because hello.fan is for adults only, and choose a display name. That name is what the creator sees; your phone number and e-mail address stay private.

Step 4: How many credits do you need?

Calls are paid from a prepaid balance of credits: 100 credits = $1. Work out what you need from the creator's price. A 10-minute video call at 200 credits a minute is 2,000 credits, or $20 (an example; every creator sets their own rate). Your first top-up comes with a launch offer of 20% extra credits; the details are in how the +20% first top-up bonus works.

Because you pay from credits you already have, you can never spend more than your balance, and a call never stops halfway to ask for a card.

Step 5: What happens when you tap Call?

Pick video, voice or chat. The creator's phone rings like a normal phone call (the Android app rings even when it's closed), and you see a ringing screen. Ringing costs nothing. If they don't pick up, or you change your mind and cancel, you pay nothing at all.

Once they answer and you're both connected, the clock starts. You're charged per started 15 seconds at their per-minute price, and you see the time and the cost as they run.

What can you do during the call?

  • Turn your microphone and camera on or off. Prefer not to be on camera? A voice call or a chat is often cheaper anyway.
  • Use a filter. There are 21 free camera filters for your own picture.
  • Switch on subtitles. Live translated subtitles in 30 languages show what the creator says in your language, and the chat in the call translates itself, with the original one tap away.
  • Send a gift as a thank-you.
  • Block or report from the call screen if anything goes wrong.
  • Hang up whenever you like. Billing stops when the call ends.

Nothing is recorded. The call exists only while it's live.

What should you do after the call?

You can rate the call, and heart the creator to get an alert the next time they come online. If you'd like a longer conversation, book a session on their calendar. If it becomes a habit, ask about weekly sessions: the same time every week, booked and paid from your credits.

What if the creator is offline?

If…Do this
they have bookable sessionsBook a time inside their working hours; it's paid up front.
they have nothing to book yetAsk them to open bookings; you'll hear when they do.
you just want to say hiSend an Icebreaker: a one-line hello for 10 credits, which they can answer once.
you'd rather catch them liveHeart them and get an alert when they're online again.

Do you need the app?

No. Everything works in the browser on a phone or a computer. The Android app is on Google Play and is handy for alerts when your favourite creators come online; the iOS app is on its way. See how the app works.

Questions fans ask before their first call

Will the creator see my phone number?

No. Numbers and e-mail addresses stay private on both sides.

What if the connection is bad?

You only pay while you're both connected. If the call never connects, there's nothing to pay.

What should I say?

Say hello, say in one sentence why you called, and ask one clear question. We wrote a whole guide: what to say on your first call with a creator.
