A paid chat platform is a service where people pay to talk one to one with a creator, teacher, coach or expert — by video, voice or text chat. The fan pays the platform, usually from a prepaid balance; the conversation happens inside the platform; and the creator receives a share of what was paid. On hello.fan, for example, fans pay per minute in credits (100 credits = $1) and creators keep 60%.
How does a paid chat platform work, step by step?
- The creator makes a page with a photo, a short description and prices for each kind of call.
- A fan finds the page — through the creator's link in bio, a group, a search or the platform's public directory.
- The fan adds credit to a prepaid balance.
- The fan calls when the creator is online, or books a time when they're not.
- The platform runs the call and charges the fan for the time used.
- The creator's share is added to their earnings and paid out to their bank.
Where does the money go?
Every payment is split between the creator and the platform. On hello.fan the creator keeps 60% of what fans pay — 70% while their linked store.fan shop is an active paid seller — and the platform keeps the rest to run calls, payments, safety and payouts. There is no monthly fee to have a page. For the math, see the earnings calculator.
The terms you'll meet
Per-minute rate
The price of one minute of a live call, set by the creator. On hello.fan rates go from 50 to 5,000 credits a minute, and video, voice and chat each have their own rate.
Credits
A prepaid unit fans spend on calls, bookings and gifts. On hello.fan, 100 credits = $1. Paying from a balance means a call never stops halfway to ask for a card.
Billing steps
How finely time is counted. hello.fan bills in 15-second steps, and the clock starts only once both people are connected — the creator's microphone (and camera, for video) has to be on. A fan never pays for a ringing phone.
Instant call
A call a fan starts while the creator is online. On hello.fan the app rings the creator's phone like a normal call.
Booked session
A fixed length and price on the creator's calendar, paid when booked. Fans who cancel at least 24 hours ahead get their credits back; if the creator cancels or misses it, the fan is refunded.
Weekly sessions
The same times every week, booked and paid automatically — built for tutors, teachers and coaches.
Gifts
Something a fan sends during or between calls, optionally with a private note. On hello.fan the creator can reply to each gift once.
Icebreaker
A 10-credit one-line hello a fan can send while the creator is offline. The creator answers once, later.
Payout
Moving earnings to the creator's bank. On hello.fan payouts go through Stripe, start at $50, and earnings become withdrawable 14 days after they're earned.
Verified badge
A sign that the creator checked their ID with the platform. On hello.fan it is a blue badge, and the check is required before the first payout.
Unlisted page
A page that stays out of the public directory and search, but still works for anyone with the link — for creators who only want their own audience.
What does the fan experience look like?
From the fan's side it should feel like calling a friend who happens to be an expert. They open a page, see a green "online" status and the price for video, voice and chat, and tap Call. The creator's phone rings. Nothing is charged while it rings; billing starts once both people are connected, and the fan sees the time and the cost as it runs. When the call ends, the fan can rate it, add the creator to favourites and get an alert the next time they're online.
If the creator is offline, the page offers what they set up: booked sessions on their calendar, a request to open bookings if there are none yet, or a 10-credit Icebreaker hello.
What do creators usually ask before they start?
- "Do I need a big audience?" No. A public directory lets new people find you; your own link brings the people who already know you. See starting with zero followers.
- "Do I have to be on camera?" No. Voice and text chat have their own prices; you can switch video off entirely.
- "Can I choose when I'm reachable?" Yes. Working hours switch you online and offline; the Offline button always wins.
- "Is anything recorded?" On hello.fan, no — calls exist only while they're live.
How is a paid chat platform different from Cameo, Patreon or a booking page?
Disclosure: this site is published by the team behind hello.fan.
- Recorded-video marketplaces like Cameo sell a clip the talent records later. Nobody talks live. See hello.fan vs Cameo.
- Memberships like Patreon sell monthly access to content you publish — not one-to-one time. See hello.fan vs Patreon.
- Booking pages sell fixed slots booked ahead; there is no "call me now".
- Paid chat platforms sell live conversations: instant calls by the minute, plus bookings, gifts and more.
What should a good paid chat platform have?
- Instant calls and bookings in one place.
- Video, voice and text chat, each with its own price.
- Fair billing: small steps, starting only once both people are connected.
- A phone app that rings like a real call, so you don't miss paid conversations.
- Safety: nothing recorded, private contact details, block and report, ID verification.
- Real payouts to your bank.
- Bonus: live translated subtitles, so language isn't a wall — hello.fan supports 30 languages.
