# How to price your first paid call (with examples by niche)

Pricing By the PaidChatPlatform team August 27, 2026 7 min read

Price your first paid call so that a ten-minute call feels easy to say yes to: think of what ten minutes of your help is worth to a first-time caller, divide by ten for a per-minute rate, keep chat cheaper than voice and voice cheaper than video, and raise the price once your online hours start to fill. Booked sessions should cost a little more per minute than instant calls, because you reserve the time and prepare.

## Why price by the minute at all?

Because it removes the commitment. A first-time caller who would never book an hour will happily try five minutes. On hello.fan billing runs in 15-second steps, and the clock starts only once both people are connected, so short calls are fair to both sides. We compare the two models in [Pay per minute or paid bookings?](https://paidchatplatform.com/blog/pay-per-minute-vs-paid-bookings/)

## A four-step method

- **Name the outcome** of a typical short call: a fixed chord, a corrected sentence, an answered question.

- **Price ten minutes** of that outcome for someone who has never met you. Be generous to them.

- **Divide by ten** for your video rate. Set voice a bit lower and chat lower again.

- **Price a booked session** slightly above the per-minute equivalent.

On hello.fan rates are set in credits (100 credits = $1), between 50 and 5,000 credits a minute, and the app shows what each price is worth in dollars and what you keep while you type it.

## Example rates by niche

These are illustrations, not recommendations for your market. "You keep" uses hello.fan's standard 60% share.

|Niche |Example |Fan pays |You keep |

|Language tutor |10-minute video practice at 150 credits/min |$15 |$9 |

|Language tutor |45-minute booked lesson at 3,600 credits |$36 |$21.60 |

|Music teacher |3-minute chord fix at 250 credits/min |$7.50 |$4.50 |

|Fitness coach |5-minute check-in at 300 credits/min |$15 |$9 |

|Career mentor |15-minute voice call at 300 credits/min |$45 |$27 |

|Expert / consultant |10-minute advice call at 500 credits/min |$50 |$30 |

|Creator / influencer |5-minute fan video call at 600 credits/min |$30 |$18 |

|Gaming / hobby chat |20-minute text chat at 100 credits/min |$20 |$12 |

## Should video, voice and chat cost the same?

No. Video asks the most of you — lighting, camera, full attention. Voice is easier and suits people who'd rather not be seen. Chat lets you think before you answer and is often where shy first-time callers start. A common pattern is chat at roughly half your video rate and voice somewhere between.

## How should you price booked and weekly sessions?

A booked session reserves your time and usually needs preparation, so price it a little above the per-minute equivalent. If your video rate is 150 credits a minute, a 30-minute booking at about 5,000 credits is reasonable, not 4,500. For weekly students, keep the same session price — the value to you is the predictability: on hello.fan each weekly session is booked and paid automatically, so you're not chasing the next appointment.

Remember the cancellation rules your callers see: a fan who cancels at least 24 hours ahead gets their credits back, and if you cancel or miss a session the fan is refunded. Price so that a refunded session doesn't hurt.

## Should you price differently for international callers?

One price for everyone is simplest and fairest. What changes with international callers is reach, not price: with live translated subtitles in 30 languages on hello.fan, someone who doesn't speak your language can still follow you, which widens your pool of callers at the same rate. If you notice calls clustering from one region, adjust your *hours* to match their evenings before you touch your price. ## Gifts and hellos are not part of your price

Gifts with private notes and 10-credit Icebreakers are extra ways fans show appreciation or say hello while you're offline. You keep your share of those too, but don't count on them when you set your rate — price your time so that it works on its own.

## When should you raise your price?

- Your online hours are regularly busy, or callers wait for you.

- Most calls are from returning fans.

- People book your sessions days ahead.

Raise in small steps and watch what happens. If calls drop sharply, step back.

## What about free calls or discounts?

Free calls attract people who will never pay. A low first rate does the same job better: it filters for people who value your time, and it pays you while you learn. If you want a low-risk way for fans to reach you while you're offline, hello.fan's 10-credit Icebreaker lets them send a one-line hello you answer once.

## How do you know your price is working?

Look at three signals after your first few weeks: whether people who open your page actually call, how long calls last, and whether callers come back. Short calls that never repeat suggest the promise on your page doesn't match what people get; long calls and returning fans mean you can start raising your rate.

## Pricing mistakes to avoid

- **Pricing only for the hour.** Most first calls are short.

- **One price for everything.** Separate video, voice, chat and bookings.

- **Copying someone with a big audience.** Their demand is not yours yet.

- **Never revisiting it.** Check your rates monthly.

## The short version

Make the first ten minutes easy to buy, keep video above voice above chat, charge a little more for booked time, and let demand tell you when to raise.
